In this collection of 36 short stories and essays (and two poems!), Carolyn Steele Agosta writes about relationships – man/woman, mother/daughter, friend/enemy, grandparent/grandchild, stranger to stranger. Indeed, Ms. Agosta’s stories are all about relationships and the twisting, turning paths they take. If she ever wrote a story about ax-murderers, they’d be a family of ax-murderers, comparing brands of axes and arguing over who Mother liked best. In After the Wink, a woman who feels she has lost sight of herself contemplates starting an affair with a man who sees her for – not who she is – but who she thinks she wants to be. Might like to be. Isn’t sure she wants to be. Well, you get it. In Coming to My Senses, Diane regains her sense of smell only to realize that too many of her other senses have also been clamped down into a narrow existence. The Last Time Dad Got Out of Jail looks at father/daughter relationships and the harsh injustices of justice. Two stories, A Stranger in a Lonely Place and Rest Area, I-40, consider the difficulties of a relationship with God.
The author of two novels, Every Little Step She Takes and The Pleasure of Your Company, Carolyn Steele Agosta celebrates the importance of family and endorses the idea that, be it ever so insanity-inducing, there’s no place like Home.

After the Wink and other stories edition by Carolyn Steele Agosta Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
It's a challenge to describe this wonderful collection of stories because there is such a variety in this book. My first thought was to pull a Forrest Gump and compare the book to a box of chocolates, but in those boxes you always get the delicious variety, but a few duds and that is certainly NOT the case here. Every one of them was unique and enjoyable in it's own way and I continue to be amazed by the imagination and creativity of the author.
I loved the variety of characters, so wide ranging I think everyone can relate to something or someone in the book, especially those with kids, marriages, aging parents, and dreams still lurking out there somewhere waiting to be fulfilled, as in the first story After the Wink. Some of the characters in the stories reappear multiple times and you feel like you get to know them, and wish for more, like Warm Curve of the Throat and Oral Tradition Fussing in the Key of G, Flags Waving and more. I really hope they all show up in a novel someday. The theme of family is very strong in this collection, although peppered among it is the occasional tale sparked with excitement to keep you on you on edge, as in I Thought She Knew and Things that Happen and other interesting tales. Stories dealing with mental illness are both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time as in Another Weekend with Susie, Litter Box Full and a little bit both sad and tense in Oh Natalie. There are 36 stories, 2 essays and 2 poems to read, thus impossible to review them all individually. For a short story collection, it's a great value with so much in one book.
Maybe on a busy stressful day when you wonder how you can manage just one more thing, or perhaps a peaceful day that you are just enjoying the simple gifts life has given you, you will think of this book like I do sometimes. Especially Leap Year, one worth reading and not easily forgotten. At least for me.
Read the book. You will be glad you did.
